Barbershops in black communities are considered cultural institutions that befittingly establish domains amongst men of this demographic, consequently enabling a novel setting to address historical health inequalities.  In 2021, the ABALON Trust team visited barbershops on 12 occasions to deliver public health campaigns. The promotion of health, in partnership with barbershops and hairdressers, has proved cost effective and productive in reaching demographics most at risk of health inequalities. Barbershops have been instrumental in delivering educational material and disease prevention for prostate cancer, sexual health education and screening amongst BME communities.  In August 2024, ABALON Trust received a £40k donation to work with barbershop in Kent to support the health and wellbeing men from BME backgrounds including diabetes and blood pressure screen, that all affect eye-health.  The project is part of our commitment to reduce health inequalities for people in BME communities in the U.K. and overseas.
